participation frustration

I appreciate and understand the fact that atheists are a pretty independent bunch, but our independence sure makes it hard to get people participating in activities in order to get an atheist group off the ground. I'm trying to get a chapter of the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers up and running here in Central Texas/Fort Hood but it's tough finding folks who want to participate in activities.

Obama vrs. Dobson

I find it highly ironic and somewhat amusing that Obama has found himself in a squabble with James Dobson (of Focus on the Family) over who's interpretation of the bible is more Christian. Since they both claim to be Christians and both claim to read the bible and possess an understanding of it, I feel like a point is being made here, but not by either one of them.

single childless day

Well, this isn't directly related to atheism, but in a way it is since it seems non-religious people don't seem to have children at the rate that religious people do. Anyway, today is Father's Day, and I'm happy on this day to honor my own father and fathers everywhere. However, occasions like this always get me wondering why there isn't a day to honor single childless people. Think about it - we pay more in taxes because we don't get the tax breaks that parents do, we use less services such as schools and emergency rooms, and we don't cause as much wear and tear on public facilities and parks and such. Makes me think we should be appreciated LOL

(disclaimer: this is a joke - I'm not slamming the dads )

Atheist Alliance International (AAI) Convention

I have been asked to represent American Atheists at the Atheist Alliance International convention to be held 25-28 September 2008 in Long Beach, California. More information is available at http://www.atheistalliance.org/conventions/2008/index.php . I will be participating in three capacities: American Atheists board member, American Atheists Military Director, and founder of the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers. There will be an event on opening night that is dedicated to honoring foxhole Atheists.

first post

Now that I am retired from the service and can get more fully involved in freethought activism, I'd thought I'd start keeping a blog. I am the founder of the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers (MAAF), the Military Director for American Atheists, and I am newly appointed to the board of directors for American Atheists with my first official meeting occuring this Sunday. I am also the coordinator for the Central Texas chapter of MAAF (CENTEX-MAAF) and I am participating in the Atheist Alliance International convention in September and in the Texas Freethought Convention in October.
